Default kv6 pump.

im planning my summer kv6 belt change and i have been looking for an original genuine rover waterpump. i did get a result on my last beltchange as i found an old new stock item which has been fine. i cant find one this time round so i have shelled out for the original genuine pump from rimmers at around £80.00 ... ouch !! well it arrived today and looking at the casting is smooth and stamped bga but the impeller is actually cast alloy. both my other originals had white nylon ones. so is this the only change or are the seals and bearings now sub quality ? i think i may let my pump carry on until it leeks and then keep an eye on the belts as im not too worried on the breakage side of things unless i hear some bearing/roller unhappiness . with all credit to rimmers excellent service less than 24 hrs. if this is the best quality out there so be it but it looks like the landy version uses the nylon impeller ( dont ask the price ) or is that an old photo or are we all being duped ? here we go round in a circle again. how about reconditioning some with good quality seals and bearings .... anyone up for it ? just a thought.

Hi,

I have no good advice here... But is the fault rate for the KV6 pump that bad? There is several premium quality OEM suppliers that make a WP for the KV6 engine, and it will be a big surprise that they can not make a good pump. Design wise, its not a change from other water pumps. I recently bought an Airtex pump for my KV6 from Island4x4. Cost £30+VAT and looked superb, delivered with a 3 year warranty. Should be good enough in my eyes, but only time will show It has a plastic impeller: http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/water-pu...la-p-4857.html

Since any real concern here would be the bearings and seals, my choice is bearing maker SKF brand pump, £40 incl from buycarparts.co.uk

Default Metal impellors for me.

There is, or was a YouTube about changing the oem plastic bits in the engine bays of VW and BMW cars.
The plastic impellors were removed as some had worn lose – whilst the shaft rotated, the impellor remained stationary - thus failing to circulate the coolant.
My guess is that it is cheaper to manufacture plastic impellors. Personally, I would opt for a good quality metal impellor.

thanks for your replies.the original pumps were nylon plastic impellers and lasted 60 to 80.000 mls.cant beat that. i dont think the originals had a problem with the impellers. the problem now seems to be more of a seals issue rather than bearings and impeller failure. this is the unknown. this is highlighted by what i have just bought from rimmers at £80.00 they are not the same as the originals. some other pumps look good but milage wise well lets wait and see.once again thanks for replies.

My original pump has done 140k. Should I change it at the next belt change then? (I changed the belts early hoping I would only need to do it once).

looking at the kv6 water pumps that rimmers have in stock it does look according to the photos that the landrover version with the L at the end of the same part number listed does indeed have the nylon/plastic impellor. I cannot justify the massive price increase (double) for the landrover part but maybe its the real original thing ! maybe not ! if not its an " L " of a conn. its a lot of money for what may even be the same animal but I would pay it if it was.mines a daily user and its worth it for me. I'm nearly 68 now and don't really want to be outside under the car out on the road in all weather conditions if I can help it. never been to a garage yet for service or repairs yet and to be honest don't trust them competence and honesty wise. I would rather visit someone like phil t4 or marina brian or other trusted traders on here whenever possible. I will continue to do what I can for as long as I can but don't like revisiting jobs that could and should have been done and dusted first time. regards xsport.

You should really change the waterpump on a V6 when the belts are changed, along with the idler and tensioner wheels.

Not sure why the BGA was supplied as Genuine MGR - to my knowledge they're not a supplier to XPart.

Don't get me wrong, BGA stuff is usually pretty good - but not Genuine MGR.
