Default Smell Of Diesel Fumes

Hi all,

I hope everyone is well.

I've got a bit of a weird one and I hope someone can throw a couple of idea's at me of what to check.

Every now and then, I get a really bad smell of diesel exhaust fumes into the car. It's not from other road uses, as it's happened when I have a clear road in front of me so I know I've not sucked in some other cars exhaust fumes.
The inlet manifold has all new seals on it, including the seal on the EGR valve.
The EGR has been mapped out also.
I've checked the exhaust and cant find a leaking gasket or a hole in it anywhere.
The pollen filter is fairly new and is fitted correctly.

The PCV filter has been changed last year, and the car has hardly been driven since, so that shouldn't be blocked.

If anyone has any thoughts on what I could check for that would be great.

Many thanks.

Richard

Check for leaks around the fuel filter and pipe work to and from the UBP if you have one.
Also check pipe work to the FBH at front and rear of car, again, if you have one.

Have you had the catalytic converter replaced with a “dummy”?
That’s what I found caused diesel fumes after I had purchased a “new to me” car.

Hi Richard.
Is the smell mainly in the morning ? when you first start the car, do you have an FBH, also check round the injectors for any pooling of diesel, feel the leak back hoses. It could just be unburnt fuel, whats it like once the engine is up to temp.

The cat is still in place. It went straight through the emissions test last year.

No FBH fitted. ( I'd love one though! )

When it happens it's quite strong. I drive plenty of other vehicles and dont have this problem with them which makes me think it' actually coming from my car straight into the cabin.

I had this a few years ago when the car was idling . The smell of exhaust into the car was giving me a headache. The exhaust flexi was to blame on mine however the exhaust didn't sound like it was blowing and I only found it by noticing soot on the subframe above the flexi and pushing the exhaust pipe up it got louder.

Thanks Pete,

I'll have another look. Mine sounds "normal" and not loud or as if blowing.
Same here though, it's giving me a headache. It only gets used at weekends at the moment, but when I start to use it more it'll be a real issue.

Unlikely to be the problem with your car but worth noting for all diesel 75/ZT owners..
When I owned Redfive I had a diesel smell for a day or so that turned out to be a fuel hose rubbing on the underside of the battery tray, it didn't show itself until it split and sprayed diesel onto the exhaust manifold..
Then you notice it...lol

Since it's a smell of exhaust fumes rather than fuel vapour, it sounds like an engine breathing/emmissions issue. If the exhaust system is OK, then the EGR system could be the source. I don't know much about the diesel, but I know the crankcase breathing system is prone to wobblies.

I had exactly the same on mine the engine was rocking on the bottom engine mount causing it to only happen occasional.
