Default Gear change cables.

Rover 75, LHD, manual, diesel, CDTi, 2000 coniseur, saloon. 90,000miles

I've just had the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder and a full clutch replacement to my car. Upon driving away I had slight problem with downshifting to 2nd gear. After a couple of days I lost all gears. Selector problem. I had to be recovered home.

A local garage diagnosed the cables as the problem. I checked with Rimmer bros, they don't stock the item for my car. Apparently I have to replace the whole unit from the gear stick onwards. It was only after 2004 that the cables where available as separates.
I was advised to replace the whole assembly from/for a later model.
Has anyone done that mod? Is it possible?
Does anyone have a new or nearly new 2000 gear cable assembly?
I'm in Spain so finding parts is very difficult here.
Any suggestions are welcomed.
Many thanks
