Default Overheating

Following some spirited motorway driving (M3 to Southampton) to have a look at a Lexus RH 450h I couldn't park easily at Lexus Hedge End. Had to reverse for a little way (about a minute's worth) to find a turning point. During which - HORROR! - the temperature gauge hit red. Turned around the car promptly, gauge dropped to normal, then up to red, continued doing this alternately until I found a parking place. Fortunately was Eastleigh Council's MoT station, helpfully let me use their lavatory and water refill.

Bonnet up, can't see any evidence of leaks, slowly in stages release radiator cap, plenty of coolant comes out under pressure, wait to cool, refill with water, drive home 45 miles, no sign of over-heating. Fan running ok when I parked; however, don't recall hearing it at Southampton - maybe because I was in panic mode(?).

Getting a local garage to have a look tomorrow, any ideas or advice?
