Default Hard Drive problems

I leave my laptop on resume most of the time, however, for a considerable time after starting to use it again everything is in ultra slow motion in terms of opening programs, refreshing screens, switching tabs etc etc.THis is the same in Firefox and IE7. It is clearly the HD as it is virtually on permanently during these times. I have scanned for viruses and malware etc to no avail. I have removed all extraneous programs and utilities. The problem persists...even to the point where I have to wait for the machine to catch up with my typing! I have defragged several times (Windows own) and still the same problem. Is the HD about to die or is there anything else I should try?

I run XP pro btw!

I always thought that this was a feature of Windoze XP Pro as I have never got to the bottom of it. Some sort of housekeeping going on.

There must be a great deal of housekeeping going on then! It has only happened in recent months but is getting worse...

Sounds to me like a little trojan of some sort? when cleaning customers computers out, I have to use a wide range of software, on some occasions this can involve 8 different programs  mainly as some just don't "see" the infection. For example, some older "nasty's" are not spotted by adaware, and yet spybot will see them, same for quite a few others, have you a copy of hijack this? if so you could run that, get the log from it and post it so as we could take a look.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/p...php#hijackthis

Of course, it could also be a sign of impending doom but usually a drive will make a little bit of noise, and cause a few crashes before going down, but again I have seen drives that just stop for no apparent reason, and over the last 3 years have seen a batch of Maxtor half hight drives go belly up (at least 8 of them)

oh... almost forgot before you sweep anything, turn OFF system restore.

There are a few entries in there that could be deleted, mainly those with "file missing" at the end of them, also that program "privacy guardian" has had a few problems, although I have never come across it, otherwise just looks fairly normal (with the exception of those yahoo and ebay toolbars) I would have not bothered with those things, and as a rule don't allow any toolbars on my PC, but they are harmless. One thing though, i do not see any references to firewall software what do you use as a firewall? another thing, do you really need all that compaq stuff running?

Firewall was turned off at the time...although the router firewall was still on. Compaq stuff....good question...I never use it, it just sits there consuming memory! I will delete the other bits recommended too!
