Default Rear screen trim

I've a preloved 'bright (SS)' rear screen trim to fit on my Mk2 Contemporary saloon (new items from Rimmers cost an arm and a leg). This is edged black with either a rubber or plastic flexible lip.
Common problem with our cars, the black bit on the old trim just fell apart so before I fit the replacement can anyone recommend a treatment to help preserve and smarten up the black stuff before the underside gets hidden from sight?
