Also - the slow starting is the same whether the car is cold or hot.
A M47R will start fine in this country without glowplugs, even in winter. Fuel pressures need checking and an injector leak back test run.

Thanks Jamie,

I did an injector leak back test. After 2 mins of cold running, I had the following:
Cylinder 1 - 12ml
Cylinder 2 - 13ml
Cylinder 3 - 8ml
Cylinder 4 - 13ml
(this included draining what was in the tubes into the catch bottles)

From what I have read, anything under 20ml for 2mins of running is good? Bit concerned why cylinder 3 is a lot lower than the others?

Sorry I've spoken to a few people about this and forgot who was who .

Get the car on live data when cranking and check the fuel pressures. It is just a guessing game without the data.

Just took the back seat out (I really should be working ) and the access panel over the in tank pump.

With the ignition on, I can hear it whirring away quietly, and shutting off as expected after 30 seconds or so.

One thing I noticed and I doubt it is related, but out of interest, there is what looks to be a cut-off connector in there - anyone have any ideas what (if anything) is missing here:

It's the plug for the FBH Dosing Pump. Need to check the fuel rail pressure ideally when cranking which will require some form of OBD tool. You will also be able to check the low pressure side.

Thanks, will see what I can sort out on the OBD side, my iCarSoft scantool which can read "any vehicle" has no idea what a Rover is :-( It can read modules that it thinks are BMW, but that is only a small number.
Need to see if I can get TOAF working.

The HP lines run at very, very high pressure, enough to kill you. Take great care when attempting any checks.---

I once had a cutting out at idle fault that turned out to be due to an aftermarket MAF that had given up the ghost. Have you tried unplugging the MAF sensor?

Unfortunately did not get any time to investigate this over the weekend. Have ordered an interface cable so hopefully that will turn up in the next couple of days and I can ask the car what it thinks is wrong :-)
