I am not sure it is possible to do on the car.

I am sure I have read about people replacing the internals on BMW turbos. Of course, even though the CDT(i) is a BMW M47, it does not use the VVT turbo that BMW use on their own models (that is good, too, because the more basic one MGR uses is much more reliable).

I am not sure about the turbo on the 1.8t, but I think you can probably get replacement internals for most turbos nowadays.

Wouldn't it be an easier job with the turbo out and on the workbench?

Cheers,
Glenn

You can replace the internal bits (the CHRA unit) quite easily and cheaply, but you must remove the complete unit from the car to do it properly. I suppose if you were a real glutton for punishment, it might be possible in-situ. But you won't find a HowTo for that. The normal method is often discussed on the forum.

I left the exhaust half on the car, due to very rusted up manifold bolts , and assembled the new CHA to the other section , then popped it back on the car... as long as you keep it all very clean its not a hard job . and all running ok ( at the moment ) .
