Great, I'll order the brushes now and try to do the repair this weekend! I was going to ask if they were the same size, I might just replace all of them if I'm going to the effort of opening it up - since it's a two-speed fan I suppose that would mean it only has three brushes then? The car had only done 75,000 miles when I bought it last August, and I've taken it up to 83,000 by now. I couldn't say when the fan stopped working though, unless the fact that the air conditioning worked coming back from the garage and then stopped again is indicative of the fan giving up, which would place the breakage two weeks ago. I'll be sure to update the thread again and thanks to everyone for their help! |

My guess is that the brush connected to the black wire will be the one which has worn out. Will I be right or wrong? Simon

Update:
Today I got everything off to access the cooling fan. I had two screws which rounded off, one which attached the radiator to the headlight mount section was already completely beyond removing and I had to drill it out, then one of the screws on the back of the motor had to have a flat head slit ground into it, but here at the end of the day, I have it all apart! Getting the plastic stroud and the fan off without detaching the air conditioning pipes was a pain, the only way I could do it was by cutting two small sections of the plastic that they could be slotted through, but it's only superficial. As a side note, I was a bit annoyed to discover that some kind of air duct on the nearside had completely disintegrated - the garage must have seen that but didn't think to tell me. I'll have a look for the part number but if anyone knows it off-hand please let me know. With the motor exposed, it's clear that a lot of water has got to it, the three screws were rusted all the way down and I'm lucky to have got them off. Interestingly, the most worn brush had actually become detached and it was sufficiently dirty to suggest that it happened a fair time ago. Then, worst of all, one of the copper contact has broken too. (Though this looks fresh ) I think it could be soldered back together but who's to say that it won't break and then I'll have to get the whole front of the car off again? All things considered, it's probably worth getting a new motor in this case. I understand that the fan with a resistor is inter-changable, is that right? |

Tube is called a Shannon tube. It's the air feed for the inlet. Just replace with suitable ducting. Although my car hasn't had one for about 15 years

Yep, the two speed resistor fitted fan with control box etc is plug and play. If you do go for a two speed fan and it has the original silver resistor replace it with a gold one from a reputable source (Jules on here?) before fitting it.
