I do this every winter as I don't use the car much.
If you don't have a garage just put the panel in the car.
Hi Terry,
If you could supply a link to a suitable waterproof solar charger with a decent length of cable it would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Neil

A 10 mile journey should be more than enough to replace the charge used to start your 1.8 engine, assuming you don't then run it with every accessory switched on. If it is discharging severely while standing, either disconnect the battery, or find out where the leak is. I have a sorned MGF, which having eaten 2 batteries in the last year, is now disconnected after I have run it up to temperature for 10 minutes, every couple of weeks. One day soon, I'm gonna get it welded and back on the road!

All modern cars 'leak', as in even when parked up and everything turned off, the ECU's still use some power. That 'leakage' can be anywhere between 20 and 60mA - my 75 is now very good at 20mA, but I make a point of replacing that lost charge once per month whilst the car is unused. It might be worth disconnecting these cars batteries, when they are in long term storage.

Pre-ECU cars should have no leakage at all, those built before around 1980 - 1990.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Default Had to laugh

Thanks for all the responses. Installed fresh battery this morning cleaned it till it was gleaming and started up first time after four months off the road

About to exit driveway waiting for traffic on main fast road when lady in cream mini stopped dead with six or seven cars behind and waved me out insisting I go first

Now to sort the coolant, headlining drop ,interior light and rear window light refix, wet drivers footwells.....never give her up

Batteries love work. Leave a battery for weeks regularly without using it, and all you are doing is ruining them. Also the quality of the ‘paste’ used on the plates make a difference. My original battery on the 75 lasted for 11 years. Hardly ever charged, except in winter, once or twice that’s all. Used practically every day. Present battery is a Bosch, gauranteed for 4 years. Already 5 years old. Been on the charger once upto now.
