Default Diesel Question.

[SIZE="6"][/SIZE

As our cars are left standing during this Covid crisis, how does the fuel in the tank stand up too not being used.

IMO it’s not a problem. I’ve had cars sat up for 6 months or more on the same tankful, with only a brief 20 min drive every 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi Rev.

I picked up my BRG diesel tourer in October. It had been stood since about the start of lockdown so 7 months or so.

Very soon afterwards the in tank pump went and when I got in there to change it there was a black, slimy gunge floating around.

The guru's on here diagnosed "diesel bug" which is apparently well known to the boating fraternity. Being parked up a micro organism gets going using the condensation which forms as the fuel warms up during the day and cools down during the night and the fuel for its food.

A swift dosing with this stuff cured it. And great service from them too.

A fuel filter change and a fresh tankful of diesel were done too.

Maybe I was just unlucky but that's what happened to me.

Hopefully nothing of the sort shall happen to you.

Hi Jules. As you know, my diesel has been in the garage since the middle of last year, while I am using the Connie KV6. I filled the tank right up when I put it away, and have only started it around 3/4 times since. I actually started it up yesterday after around 3/4 weeks since the last time. It started straight away no problems. My garage must be well ventilated because the brake disc’s are still shiny from the middle of last year. I did put some Redex injector cleaner in when I filled up. So hoping everything will be ok when I put it back on the road in the middle of this year.

You can use the stuff I put in the link as a preventative measure. It's at a much weaker dose. Might be worth spending a few ££'s for some peace of mind. As far as I can find out the bugs will happily clog up a fuel filter and I'm thinking that it's quite possible that they finished off my ITP. It just seems very coincidental the the ITP died very soon after I'd brought her home. Or it may be that it was on its way out anyway. Who knows .

Take care.
