Last year, whilst my Rover 75 V6 saloon was off the road for 2 weeks for repairs, I had the use of a Rover 75 Tourer and I was really impressed by its road holding abilities and how much scrap it could carry in the back. My next car in the UK could be a Rover 75 tourer.

I could not have summed it up better, most new stuff is about as exciting as a Fridge Freezer and leaves me just as cold. Even some of the expensive stuff is dull as. Maybe the manufacturers are trying to bore us off the roads?

I thought hard about this a couple of years ago, when it seemed like every couple of months a new expensive suspension rattle etc appeared (mine has about 190k on it). I couldn’t think of anything similar for any kind of reasonable price… so I kept chucking money at it.

Fortunately, without wishing to tempt fate, it now seems to be behaving itself, having had most of the suspension, all the brakes replaced etc. So hopefully another few years.

But when it does become uneconomical to keep, it’s electric for me – you can get a low mileage Leaf with owned battery for something like £8k, and I only do short journeys now, so if I had a charging point at home I can’t see the down side.

But of course it depends on your needs. I always thought about something Rover-like till I realised my requirements had changed since I bought her nearly 11 years ago… my girlfriend has a little Aygo, and I’ve found myself looking for excuses to drive it – it’s like hurtling around in a dodgem, handles well, uses little petrol, and you can park it in small spaces.

If I was looking for performance… somebody mentioned the M3. I had two, between 2005 and when I got the Rover in 2010, and found them excellent – fast, comfortable, not as heavy on the fuel as you’d think – and bulletproof if serviced properly. Only drawback is the regular excursions backwards through hedges onto your roof every time it rains, but nothing’s perfect

Oh, and my mechanic has one of the Chinese MG6’s – the trim is epically ghastly, but it’s actually pretty good to drive.

I have always kept my eye on the used car market for decent cars and spotted a lovely Toyota Avensis diesel only this week!

Nothing to do with me but if I was looking for something........
That's the sort of thing I'd be looking at!

This guy has had rear supension corrosion issues on his Jag (now fettled), so not going there either:-

After my tourer was written off due to fire damage I bought a 2006 BMW e90 320d [M47 engine] it's a nice enough car very quick being 163hp but it is just a car, has no character like 75 has . So far I have replaced all the shock absorbers , relay for the ecm and about to fit a full clutch kit including the dmf. I always wanted a Rover 75 hence keeping mine for nine plus years would still have it now if it had not caught fire. If the finances allow I might by another 75 in the future. We still have the wifes tourer but this would take a lot of work to bring the bodywork up to scratch as it wasn't that tidy when we bought it and it's only a club se.

The Jaguar XF gets my vote, especially the latest facelift version, though it will be a while before it’s affordable secondhand. A classy car.

Default R75 Replacement

What do you get with a modern replacement for a R75?

It will be lighter.

A better Radio.
A Reversing camara.
Better anti theft tech.

Maybe slightly better mpg.
You pay less road tax.
More airbags.
Maybe a glass roof.

Better reliability for a while.
Most new cars are quiet like a 75.
Most new cars maybe use fine materials inside the cabin.
Electric suspension gizmo which effects of ride and handling for the better.

and the bad.

Most of the alternatives are hidious looking wth for the moment styling, not timeless looks.
The interiors of most new cars are beyond ugly.

Many important parts of the engine and chassis will be made of plastic rather than metal.

The windows will be small.
The computer gizmos will annoy you.

The tyres and exhaust and brake pads, oil and filters will cost a lot more.
All spare parts if you need them will cost a fortune.
The common preventable faults are not widley known yet.
If the car ever gets a damp interior you may get millions of electrical fauts.

My choice would be :-

Jag XF, BMW 5 Series, Big Volvo of some kind

but then I can fix cars myself.

Otherwise it's got to be some kind of Toyota thing if you need reliability.

Iv just purchased a Volvo v60 d3 automatic .
6 months of looking for what is best for my needs for the next couple of years.
This year my milage is going to be high .
I'm happy with the choice it's not new and I need to do a few jobs to it , but I will get to know the car before I use it .

i still have one of the four i had, still got my zt and whilst its fun to drive
my new jeep grand cherokee is in another league.
V6 turbo diesel is scary fast and very quiet, infact you would not know its a diesel.Drives superbly, smooth 8 speed box.
All leather interior, every gadget even heated steering wheel!! not that i need it over here.
The zt is still a bit of fun but you really can tell the difference between car manufacturing over the last 20 years.
Only down side, parts costs are crazy.
Headlight assembly goes, $1,500aud, rover 75- $200ish
and anything electrically goes wrong , back to the stealership!!!

I agree with you. At 81 I suppose in reality I will probably finish driving before my 75, be it the V6 or diesel, is destined for the scrap heap, I have to make my mind up yet which one it is to be. That is going to be hard. The KV6 is an auto with toys, the diesel is a club manual.Problems problems.Certainly it will not be an electric car..
