Its a CDT Connoisseur Auto that I have just bought, I just don't understand how it got through the MOT like that and the wishbone bush was shot as-well plus the drop link gaiter was in half. Methinks that the fella that I bought it from must have a good mate who does MOTs. Still if you buy a car privately you are always going to take a gamble

If you have the high spec. headlights, they have a mechanism on the back to allow the dip to be changed from left to right for use on the continent.
From memory it is a small lever, but as it has been a while since I found it, I stand to be corrected. It may be that it was bumped during the service / MoT.

Knurly bits?

This one raises/lowers the beam

This one moves beam left/right

I'm assuming a Mk1

If doesn't actually change from LEFT to RIGHT.

It just cuts the top off the beam so it doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers.--

The 'Continental driving' adjuster simply removes the standard 'kick up' on the left side of each headlamp beam. This allows you to set the beam so the top edge doesn't dazzle drivers approaching on your left side.

This is what the adjuster does.

The flat edge state is for 'Continental driving'. The masking plate is blanking off the bottom half of the beam internally, but this gets inverted by the projector lens so bottom becomes top.

EDIT: This shows how dipped HIDs waste around half the light they produce.
