clutch/gearbox issues
This morning all was fine, drove to work without a problem or anything feeling different. Leaving work this evening was a different kettle of fish however.
Engine started fine, let off handbrake and lifted clutch and it instantly stalled. Was stuck in gear and clutch pedal stuck down. Pulled it up and out of gear, started again and able to engage reverse and back into the space, it moved back and forth a bit and had no problems around the car park other than the bite point being wafer thin and the heavy section being much further into the travel and it feeling very light and springy. Got going home, had one repeat of the above on the way home going from 2nd to 3rd off a roundabout, got to my town (people behind didn't appreciate my even slower than normal driving), got it into town and into 2nd, then had to stop at some traffic lights, and it just wouldn't go back into gear. Pushed to the side of the road. Eventually coaxed home in 1st gear. I can see where between the gearbox and engine joins there is a leak, looks to have been from the front/upper front area, but I can't get the right angle to see properly just where it is from. So, here is my plead for help, what is the fault/likely fault? What is a garage likely to charge? Anyone here able to help? Please? |

Slave cylinder of clutch probably gone. They can be bled to nurse for a short while sometimes but needs replaced. Cost about 600 minimum in a garage. It's a gearbox out job hence labour gets expensive. Some forum members do it. Cost me 250 for parts to do myself.

If you’ve got a leak, then as isa sound like your slave cylinder is leaking which is a gearbox off job. You’re best replacing the clutch at the same time. Price wise anything from £500-800 realistically.

I managed it alone but needed an engine crane but I've read of guys getting creative with threaded rod and winding box down and up again. Gets easier the more you do. I've just done my 2nd and I used a lot of lessons I learned the first time.

No chance of it just being a seal then?
Clutch was only done about 4 years ago, so nowhere near needing replacing I'm gutted. Think this may be the end of the road for my car, I just cannot justify that kind of money for a garage to do it and haven't got the tools or know how to do that myself. I was given it by my dad 17 months ago, he owned it from new, took me to uni, on holidays, I grew up with the car, but it seems its time has come |

If it’s leaking from the bell housing underneath then it can only be the slave as far as I’m aware...maybe someone else a bit more knowledgeable can give their input...

I agree with you rav. Too far away for me. Just remember that it seems expensive but buying something else is more expensive.

Damn. Will call a couple a couple of places tomorrow, but don't have much hope for a good price.
Buying something else may be more expensive to buy, but I would hope would be more reliable, what I'm looking at would still have 2-3 years of manufacturers warranty too. Difficult to find a car that has beige leather and a sunroof preferably also with satnav and xenons at a price I'll pay without going to sky high mileage though. Ho hum. |

Was the slave cylinder changed when you had your clutch done previously? Because, it certainly should of been done. If that’s all that’s wrong with it, it’s worth doing. If done properly, there’s no reason why it won’t go on for another 100k.
