Unless you drive in an area with a very polluted atmosphere, the standard filter is fine. Otherwise, the 'odour reducing' active carbon version is rather expensive and unnecessary. It will however, remove the smell of diesel exhaust in stationary traffic or driving in a city centre. So, personal choice really.

was there any water in the plenum when you changed the pollen filter? Could be the reason it is damp. Check your drains for debris..

Also when travelling at 70 mph in the English countryside TC!

Last week the driver of a filthy diesel Audi, who was in a desperate hurry, overtook me on the M40 then swerved in front and floored the throttle to "undertake" another vehicle. The Audi belched a disgusting cloud of soot into my path which, seconds later, my clean Rover 75 could not avoid. There was no time to switch to recirculation mode. You've just reminded me TC that I smelt nothing and I have the pollen & odour version fitted. It's a Mahle LAK243 and it cost £18.59 from a motor factor, only a few pounds more than the plain pollen alternative. As these filters last many years I consider it good value and I was glad that I had it.

I've been getting ( or noticing ) diesel fumes smell in my car recently, and was going to ask whether the carbon filter version was worth the extra wedge, so thank you , I'll invest in the expensive version now I know it works! Many thanks!

Simon you are a brave man to mention diesel as being anything other than "the best thing since sliced bread" terms- I had some very rude and unpleasant posts when I mentioned diesel fumes and badly maintained diesels being nasty Chris S.

I always use charcoal pollen filter, even that they are not very effective.
Rover pollen filter change intervals are 1 year to carbon and 2 years for normal filter.

In reality, charcoal filter loses it odour filtration abilities in 4-6 months.

I have tried filter from couple of manufacturer, but did not noticed any difference.

If you would really want good odour filtration, the charcoal layer on filter, would have to be like 5mm thick.
Something similar like some home/office air cleaner has in their filters.
