Default Direct swap mp3 compatible changer for HiLine?

Since the OEM gear in our cars is mostly made by 'normal' manufacturers, I figured it should be possible to swap the original CD changer with a newer unit that can play mp3 CDs. So I had a search, and got the impression there was at least one Kenwood model that could be used, but I wasn't positive.

So, does anyone know if there's anything out there that's a direct swap for the changer in a 54 plate ZT that will play mp3 CDs? It seems that if there is, it'd be a cheaper, easier option than fiddling with grom adapters etc.

Hi Dave,
do you have the Hi-Line system?
If so, in a 54 reg car your standard CD player should play mp3 CDs. They would need to be CD-R not CD+R.

Kearton

Thanks Kearton. I've spent ages trying to figure out what equipment might be compatible (and not getting very far), but hadn't actually though to just try a disk

I'll give it a go tomorrow, and cheers for the -R tip!

OK, just been and checked and unfortunately the changer in my car does not accept mp3 CDs. Yes, it's a Hi-Line.

So, Kearton or anyone else, any idea of the part number for the later, mp3-playing changer so I can look out for one? Or any alternatives?

Have a look here,I know its an American site but if you look at the changer it looks all too familiar.........Has to be cheaper over here or even second hand.............

Yeah I saw that too, and it looks promising - the radio module in the Hi-Line is BMW kit after all. But I don't want to shell out unless I'm sure it'll work ok.

Which is rather annoying because one just went through ebay for £40

I bought a 10 disc MP3 Kenwood changer on ebay I'll get the number off it tomorrow. It will require the brackets to be "persuaded" to allow it in as it is obviously 4 disc thicker. I just bent them out the way and used 1 screw either side. I've had it installed for a year now.

I might sell it now as I've just fitted a Kenwood KDC-4547uw head unit and it connects to my iphone so I won't be using the changer (plus the head unit doesn't have a connection on the back for it anyway)

The new head unit is miles better than the original KDC-391 unit

A few years ago I bought from here..

http://www.connects2.co.uk/

A Sony mp3 6 disc changer and a interface/adaptor unit that works fine both with the Hi Line system and a Symphony.

As far as I know there are not any changers that are a direct swap.

Maybe getting rid of the changer and buying an adaptor for either a i pod of a usb reader would be cheaper option, as some of the members on here have done..

The BMW MP3 6CD changer will also work and gives correct display of the MP3 ID tags (song title etc,). You can sometimes find them on eBay.
