Default diesels, what have you done to improve MPG?

Ok guys just wondering if there is room for improvement on my MPG.

my ztt 135cdti is averaging 40mpg which is around 70% motorway 30% A and B roads.

I would like to improve on this as its still hitting me too hard in the pocket for my liking given that it is costing £84 to fill from empty and I am doing this every week!

anyways, I have serviced car with K&N standard replacement filter, and replaced the PCV filter for the BMW option.
The EGR valve is clean and disconnected.

my next plans are to fit the new O rings I have got, and fit a proper EGR bypass.

Oh and its a manual

any other suggestions?

I know of the Roverron but cannot afford the £250 yet. My tyres are at correct pressure, I run empty and keep it between 1500-2500 revs.

cheers

I'm in a similar boat.

I was getting 45mpg consistently on the motorway run. I've cleaned the EGV/PCV and hope that they will improve it.

I also pumped up the tyres which were only 28psi - so that should claw back a little economy.

My next job is to use this stuff:

Which has a great reputation for really cleaning out the engine.

My goal is to hit 50mpg on the motorway cycle. That should be achievable, I hope.

Me too, I'm obtaining arround 41mpg, car is fully serviced, Castrol 5w30 on it, O rings fitted (no improvement on fuel), egr also cleaned and disconected.

Roverron fitted, low settings 1 & 2, noticed that with the pierburg the fueling is worst, cleaned the bosch maf and much better on performance and fueling, but still arround 41Mpg, also with 100% motorway only improves to 42mpg.

Default Mpg

The obvious question is what is your temperature on the OBD?. Very common for the diesels to run too cool as the thermostats tend to open too early as they age. mine was running at 74C(should be 88C) and my mpg improved by 2-3 when I fitted an in-line thermostat in the top hose. I used a thermostat housing but most people now fit the new stat inside the top hose. Do as search there are loads of posts on the subject. You do not have to remove the old thermostat. I have an automatic and will always see 49-50 mpg on a motorway but it doesn't take much town driving to bring it right down.

What temperatures does your engine reach?

Run the diagnostic mode as detailed here: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=55585

If it's not getting hot enough then a thermostat mod may help improve fuel consumption.

OH! Wuzerk beat me to it. He knows a lot more about it too.

I have averaged 52mpg now over about 5000 miles. Its dropping since it started to get dark nights due to use of the lights for most of my journeys, but the only difference I saw was by trying to keep the revs below 2000. That takes patience though, but I used to change gear around 2500 and used to get 46mpg so it was the only thing I changed. I did that after a friend of mine demonstrated that a Skoda Octavia could get 62mpg regularly by keeping the revs to 1800. I'm not that patient, but at 2000rpm in 5th gear you can still manage a reasonable pace on the motorway.

With a manual you should manage 45 mpg plus, a bypass wont help, except bypassing garages.. heh heh...

New Thermo may help, no guarantees though..

The non mway miles are the killer innit...

Running around locally I get about 30 mpg, but can make Paignton (300 miles) on half a tank.. Doncha just have to love mways..

I read on here somewhere one should never drive the diesel in empty as it messes the fuel pumps up. The ones in the tank.
