Default What's this please

Forgive the simple question but having searched the forum and looked at dash diagrams can't find the answer. What is this oval part on the dash that sits between the steering wheel and the centre console on the dash?

Thanks for the quick replies, I wondered if it might be something like that. Out of interest is it completely enclosed behind the oval bit that sits on the dash? I was wondering if it would be possible to house a small microphone behind it for a ham radio set up? It might be a bit too far away for though to pic up voice.

I would not put it there as when ever the fan is running there is a hose just being the grill leading to the fan , the fan then draws air into the opening so the sensor can read correctly , id be worried that the will be a noise either the fan or a slight wind noise

what about in the light in the roof ? thereare little grills in there already for I believe the factory car kit ?

Thanks once again for the sound advice, I'd forgotten about those grill in the light which I didn't know what they were for either! Does anyone have a link to the BMW microphone which fit the grill please? Had a quick look and it seems BMW do different sorts of mics.
