hi it's an x3 e38 transpires it was a wheel sensor i will use it more frequent in future thanks everyone for all the input much appreciated

I was amazed they did not know how to get into a BMW. The boot key lock was deleted the year before mine was built hence the problem.

Just say if you need the method.
Which goes to show that BMW don't have all the answers.---
