Unhappy Belt Tensioner.

I had a V belt shred on me 75 CDTI. (the one that drive just about everything)
Located a new belt, proceeded to fit new belt. all was good to this point !!

Got new belt in place, tried to move the belt tensioner with 24mm ring spanner clockwise direction. The tensioner only moved about 5mm. I assume the mechanism is ceased or broken.

I have searched the net for a procedure to replace it. No joy.
Can anyone give me a guide as to the replacement procedure. It looks as if the engine has to be dropped??

Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards to all
Mike

Hi Mike.
The auxiliary belt is a five ribbed belt, only fit a decent belt such as gates below.

You need to get some leverage on the tensioner nut maybe use an aviation spanner as they are longer so more leverage.

peel back the wheel arch liner you get more access that way in my opinion.

Fit the spanner as far left as possible so you get good leverage.

I would check and change the compressor belt as well at the same time as that belt seems to crack wear more that the large belt.

Note the compressor belt cracking

So it looks like you need to get more leverage on the tensioner.

Mike is the spanner moving but not pulling the tensioner back? If so then you need to get a spanner on the nut at the back and tighten it up - it is a left hand thread.

FWIW, the last time I done this, I had to tap a small wedge of wood between the ring end of the spanner and the chassis leg (once the ring end was over the tensioner nut &#128556 to stop the spanner slipping off / rounding the nut.

Default CDT belt tensioner bolt loose?

Am part way through replacing the alternator on my CDT and have got to the point of having a spanner on the auxiliary belt tensioner and trying to remove the tension from the belt. PROBLEM! The hex head of the tensioner rotates as if the tensioner bolt is loose. How do I tighten it up in place or do I have to remove stuff to get it off and do it on the bench?

If you have the alternator off you have a little more room to wiggle a 13mm spanner into the rear of the tensioner and hold the nut while you tighten the 24mm nut on the front, as Mike Noc says, its a LH thread, give it a good nip up and you will be able to move the pulley easily when you need to refit the belt.
