Default The LEZ and ULEZ: chalk and cheese!

Hi Michael,

Unless the rules have changed without me noticing, the LEZ, which as you say extends as far as Heathrow, applies to diesels only. It is ironic that vehicles are penalised at Heathrow when aircraft have no emission control equipment whatsoever.

The ULEZ is completely different. Currently it shares its boundary with the Congestion Charge zone but in October 2021 is scheduled to be extended to within the north and south circular roads, which still doesn't include Heathrow. It applies to both diesel and petrol engines and it's this system which is being discussed in this thread, not the LEZ!

Here in mainland Europe, I don't know about v6s, but CDTIs are definitely not compliant with German ULEZs - one of the reasons I had to get rid of my 75. You are simply not allowed to drive them in the city without a green "Umweltsplakatte" (environment permit) for which pre-Euro 5 diesels do not qualify. Penalties for driving a non-compliant car in German cities are strictly enforced, and if similar restrictions become widespread across UK cities, the sad fact is that cars like the 75 / ZT CDTI will become increasingly rarer sights on our roads.

My 2002 2.5 V6 Rover 75 Auto will have to pay the new charge, but
My 2002 2.5 V6 ZTT 190 manual won’t, nor
My 2004 2.5 V6 ZT 180 Auto either, nor
My 2004 4.6 V8 ZT 260?

So note to self, don’t take the Rover anymore, but the identical engined and higher tuned MG V6s and big old V8 guzzler are fine

Note to self, don't drive in London as it is the armpit of the country, problem solved

It you live in London, sell your house and buy a city in another part of the country, again problem solved

.Good point, Brian. If there weren't so many people in London, it wouldn't be so congested, so no need for congestion charges. Seems like common sense to me that businesses should invest in places where all there costs are less. It's not like you have to be able to get to London to be able to talk to Important People. We now have magic electric speak machines Up Norf, too!

Totally agree - and if one single thing exemplifies the monumental stupidity of our vehicle taxation system it is this fact.

Sadly tho - we have governments that listen to 16 year old children with Aspergers Syndrome and set their policies by that influence rather than reality and common sense.

Please don’t think you guys are alone on this up there north of Watford Gap!

Plenty of people in the South West think exactly as you guys do.

Not a political statement but you only have to look at the recent voting patterns across the country to see what is going on.

There is a bubble world inside the M25 that is worthy of a Dystopian Science Fiction novel. Inside the bubble exists the chattering classes that think the SW is all country bumpkins and cow dung whilst the North is all factories and defunct coal mines.

They justify how they think differently to us as because they believe they are educated and we are not.

A classic example is the BBC’s Emily Maitlis (her of the recent BBC Leadership debate debacle) who tweeted a while back that she has been put off “the will of the people idea”.

It seems the LEZ doesn't apply to cars or motorcycles, period, never mind diesel or petrol:- "LEZ: only covers larger vans, minibuses, lorries, buses and coaches as well as other specialist vehicles driven within most of Greater London" https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/che...-vehicle-35896

Now When it came to alerting TfL about V6s & ULEZ, I was very mindful of releasing Shere Khan into Trafalgar Square, so before I did I spoke to a work friend who helped create the ULEZ . His advice was to petition TfL to have ALL the V6s shown exempt, since because TfL aren't allowed variant type registrations within the same engine So, that's what I did.

This may go nowhere, but I've employed a damage-avoiding approach.

Paul.
