Thank you for all of your kind comments. I have 4 cats ranging from 6 to 15 years old but they are not dogs. They are great to have around and all have their own character but I don't get the same relationship with a cat I do with a dog. I think the speed this happened has made things worse for me. When I have lost dogs in the past we knew it was coming so were prepared. They were and are missed but it didn't seem to hit as hard as this loss has.

Thank you all again, I suspect it may not be to long before I start looking for another dog. The RSPCA branch I worked at for a while has closed down but I think in a few weeks I will contact the one that took over this area and see what they have.

That terrible news mate, nothing worse than losing a pet.

Feel for you Rob, its awful when it happens- we just tried to concentrate on all the joy and laughter our border Collie had given us. Chris S.

Default the price we pay

So Sorry, the price we pay for unconditional love, my Mum used to say every dog should come with a warning 'one day I'll break your heart' only because they don't judge us only love us. your greatest honour to her may be is to have another dog who also needs you, Don't read Rudyard Kipling's "Dinah in Heaven" it will make you cry, I was asked by Mum to read it to her when she was unwell and I couldn't see the writing.

Thanks Chatty, and everyone else for their kind comments. I am still missing her and in the past when a dog died we had another one as well which eased things or very soon had a new dog, mainly a rescue in need of a lot of care.

I have my eye on another dog in a rescue charity. He is very timid and has had a reclusive life but is starting to come round in his foster home. His owner was a carer to his mother, he died suddenly and his mother taken into care. This dog seems to fit what my son and I can offer. Not 100% sure yet as my leg has decided to get worse this week and its making me think about my ability to walk a dog in the future. Its also ok with cats which is a bonus, so although its earlier than I thought we may soon be looking into the adoption of this poor dog.
