Leyland National. A classic?
I think so. Innovative construction and production line unlike anything before or since...

Mk1 was very easy to slide in the wet and deadly on snow no matter what the speed. Later versions were far better handling especially the DP vehicles.

I can remember them coming into service when I was at school with Midland Red - they looked so modern compared with the old buses.

They were an absolute nightmare to drive, when empty you could lose it on damp roads never mind the wet or snow

My dad was never a bus driver but was a conductor for many years on the old RT's.
I could sit at the front behind the engine and listen to that tickover for hours...never got tired of that sound. I was fascinated to watch the driver preselect the gears.... I just fount this site, which was great to read... http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~denny/transport/#TheRTBus Sorry for the diversion.... here she is http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=rt+...C-YH0DQ&zoom=1
