It wasn’t, it’s been mysteriously vanishing! This is currently my prime suspect by far, and I hope it turns out to be the culprit once I get everything back together. But my symptoms were quite similar to yours — coolant loss and overheating but no conclusive leak in spite of using tracer fluid in the coolant.

I paint mine silver on both sides and torque evenly. Normal silver metal paint will do.
That seems to do the trick!
Thanks for the caution! Maybe I should think twice about replacing the old one with a new identical one then.

No, use a new one, just give it a good coating of silver paint! Both sides.
That is an old trick that can also be used with head gaskets (even if you have to re-use).
The paint will repel water and improve sealing.

Talking Update

Just to update you all with the issue. I finally have the car back from the local Frog Doctor after 4 weeks. The issue was indeed the water pump so also a new cam belt was fitted along with new timing belt covers as they had become worn on the inside and couple of damaged fittings and some inlet gaskets. The time it took was in some part of the way the mechanic worked as he asked me for parts. (it was cheaper and quicker for me to source from UK) I would get them and then a few days later he would ask for some more parts. Big thank you to Rimmer bros. All the parts I ordered were despatched the same day and with express delivery arrived within 48-72 hours which is great to this remote part of the Pyrenees. 5 delivery's in total. Also there is no weekend working here and a lot of public holidays. Also after seeing the car in bits the mechanic did a good job considering he didn’t want to touch it in the first place. I won't say how much I paid as that's for me to know, but Christmas is cancelled. However, back on the road and fingers crossed all should be good for another 75000 miles at least. Also the RAC kept in constant contact with me and the garage and were a great help in translation and sorting out some other things. Great piece of mind to have them.

Thanks for letting us all know what the solution was Graeme. That will be very helpful when others with coolant loss read your thread.
