Default Cool Running

I’m not yet entrenched in the many (apparently) foibles of 75 KV6 ownership, but learning on the hoof! Using the dash diagnostics (7.0 etc) the coolant temp was holding steady at 62-65 even after a run up the South Downs from Goodwood Motor Racing circuit to Goodwood Horse racing circuit - the Trundle, which both pleased, for not overheating, and surprised. Reading the numerous posts here, it seems as though this is not actually good, and I have concluded the satanic thermostat needs changing? Assuming this is called for, I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction as what bits I’d need to carry out the change, as like to have everything to hand before I start!! (Or hand it over to my indie!)

Contact Nick Daldry at ecar parts in Sandy, I've used a lot of his kv6 stat kits and they are as good as the originals.

I've also got a cool running V6 but it isn't leaking and although I've done the job several times, I'd rather not if I don't have to, and there aren't any standard 88 deg thermostats available anywhere.

The diesel owners when faced with the same problem fit an extra in-line thermostat (Renault 5). I've got the thermostat but haven't yet found a larger hose to make an adapter of sorts, but winter's coming so I'll be done soon.

Regards

If you have the correct thermostat you shouldn't need a bigger hose. Just soften the hose in hot water lubricate both the thermostat and hose and push it in. It's a tight fit though

Thanks, as I was wondering if the diesels had a larger hose than the V6s. It is tight even without the lip of the thermostat. I had a look at the top hose this evening and noted that the hose is reinforced so I wondered if the braid would yield. Only 4 degrees outside at the moment, so I've got to do something soon.

Keep well

I understand very well why you're firmly sticking to a 88° thermostat Mike!
But here a bit farer down it's still 18° at night and a tad less than 30° during the day!
You may understand why I'm sticking to my lower temperature V6, mainly because summers are going hotter and hotter in the years to come...

Now regarding what you said in another thread related to the same (https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk//fo...62&postcount=4) : "I believe a cooler engine will result in higher fuel use and greater emissions", I can give you my last MOT emission statistics:

CO slow idle: 0.00
CO speeded-up idle: 0.00
Lambda: 1.001
Isn't that nice? clean as a whistle...

I don't think my mpg is worse either.

Seem to remember my SD1 while running on ethanol did very well on the emissions too, so not so surprised by your figures. I had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and increased delivery by approximately 20% which I had read would be sufficient to emulate petrol.

However these days, the price of ethanol here is very close to that of petrol (18.17skr vs 18.98) so taking the loss of power into account, ethanol just isn't attractive.

I'll have a go at fitting the Renault 5 thermostat, although I know it's going to be a struggle but if it brings the temperature up to the mid 90s then it'll be worth it and perhaps provide an alternative to others with a cool running V6.

Keep well

Last message a bit out of topic to give you some answer.
Average prices in France today:

- E10 = 1.56 € (E5 = 1.65 €)
- E85 = 0.70 €

I well understand why E85 in Sweden is no longer attractive, but why nearly the same price as petrol, knowing that you need 20/25% more E85?

Gave up on the follies of politicians ages ago, especially as they promote ethanol production from waste wood production of which there is a lot of here. But now the message seems to be go electric even when oil fired stations have to be used.

Someone should ask Greta
