Default Stat

Any thermostat fitted in the top hose should have the wax cylinder (spring) end facing the engine so that it receives the hot water first.

Was just reading that Jules and came to the conclusion that my results with the specalist components thermostat with hole still intact are pretty much identical to your results with the renault stat

I only drove 7 miles back on restricted roads and with the heater on. Dash read out showed a max of 75c and lowest 62c.

Temperature outside was - 1c, and I did have the heater on in the car, (set at Hi) because I'd forgotten what a heater was, and the luxury was intoxicating!

I suppose in this bitter weather it's better to avoid frost-bite and to hell with fuel efficiency.

I'm afraid all the technical stats are over my head? I reckon in time they'll be a majority decision on hole or no hole, width of hole if pertinent, best way to plug a hole if no hole, and on the whole it's all been worth it on the hole, or no hole ...
As someone mentioned earlier, there seems to be a lot of flow when you blow through it with the hole. I blocked the hole with a bit of bluetack, and there was still a fair amount of flow when blowing, so I do wonder whether the hole is really necessary. You can actually see daylight through the 4 mounting points where the spring clamp attaches to the circular body of the thermostat, and I guess air could also escape around the edges of the thermostat where it sits in the housing, as it sits in there with no gasket, and no pressure holding it down (then again though, I guess the pressure from the pump may block some of that off).

Does anyone know exactly which thermostat we received with the Specialist Components housing. I think I may try and buy another and try it without the hole. I don't fancy bits of chemical metal or some-such knackering my water pump?

Did you check to see if the thermostat had actually opened after your hotter runs? Was the radiator hot?

I fitted an 88Deg renault stat today. My OEM stat is not bad, always had good heater temp and would get 82-84 on the OBD temp reading on a steady motorway run.

With the renault stat in place, temp now steadily rises to 93/94 and then drops rapidly to 82/83 as the renault stat opens. It then gradually rises again up to mid 90's. It repeated this cycle 4 times on my test run today with outside temps of -2deg. This was steady 60-70mph driving, no hills and no heavy acceleration. I think the idea of this engine being so efficient that it can never achieve hotter temps is a myth.

Happy that the temps are a fair bit higher now but not sure I like the large temp drop as the stat opens. Oh, and that's with a sheet of cardboard in front of the rad that I've been running for the past year.

Rich

If you've see the dash OBD temp drop quickly from whatever the 'high' is that you peak at then I think it is safe to presume the 'stat opened.
