Stonehenge A303 Tunnel
Just been watching the news about Stonehenge and the A303. The A303 is to go into a tunnel for 2 miles.
5 minutes of waffle about who is happy and who is not and how long discussions have been going on for but nowhere did it tell the viewer the expected or agreed planned route. That was helpful and useful. macafee2 |

Most comments suggest the tunnel will go under Stonehenge, but it is south of the A303 route. It would benefit through traffic but the work will give massive disruption to the locals.

I wonder how much over budget it will go? The western section is quite a change. macafee2 |

I have always liked the A303 for it's quirkiness, history and aviation sites, though one does take the chance of those traffic holdups.
There was an interesting documentary about it, here https://vimeo.com/25813595 |

Took them donkeys' years to complete the A3 tunnel under the Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead, so don't hold your breath.
6 months after they closed and turfed over the old road I was walking the dog up there, and there was a steady stream of cars driving up the old A3, coming to the end of the road and the bollards, seeing the expanse of grass in front of them and staring disbelievingly at their Sat Navs. |

I remember it well Ian - first car I drove on it when it opened was a convertible Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Hardly any other cars on the road too. From what I remember the M25 hadn't been completed so the M3 was lightly used.

Bloomin' stupid idea. A bypass for Amesbury and Salisbury running between the two would cost a whole let less. Ignoring all other arguments, a web search suggests that a mile of dual carriageway costs £16.2 million to build. £2.7bn is enough for 166 miles of dual carriageway. Someone do the sums then see which tory -supporter- gets the 2.7bn tunnel contract and who is one the board of directors (either now or in 4 years time).
