Default Tight Nuts! and ABS Sensor

Had the car out for the first time in a few days, ABS light came on and the speedo went to zero!

After a search on here seems it's a well known issue with the OSF ABS Sensor.

After a stop for a cuppa, came back home and the fault cleared.

Got home, thought I'd pop the wheel off and take a look and maybe clean things up a bit.

Failed at stage 1! Could not move the wheel nuts. Tried the locking nut first, trashed a socket. Tried another nut, trashed another socket!

Think I'll be going to a local garage to request they loosen them with an air gun.

Why Oh Why do people put these on so tight!

Anyway, a question - Is it worth trying to clean anything on / around the sensor or is it just better to replace it?

You will be lucky to get it out without destroying it. If you do it may be worth cleaning, it could be the bearing at fault.

Hi Steve,

The usual cause of this problem is the ABS sensor cable releasing itself from the bracket on the suspension strut. When the steering is then turned to full lock, the cable comes into contact with the tyre. This erodes the insulation and eventually damages the conductors inside and puts on the ABS warning light.

I'm afraid that you'll have to replace it. The part itself can be obtained very cheaply from e-bay traders, but removing the old one is an awful job. They are usually stuck solid in the hub.

Had the same thing few weeks ago. As said, doubt you will be able to remove it to clean. I had to drill mine out and clean the hole with a round file and emery. Europarts want £100+ for new one but I got one from many on ebay for about £12.

Correct ! It's a sort of push-fit rubber grommet . I've secured mine into the bracket with a small cable tie as the mounting block was becoming well worn .

I've secured mine with a labyrinth of cable ties! I do not want to have to drill out another ABS sensor.

It's behaved ever since!

Not sure what caused it but I'll get the wheel nuts loosened this week and pop the wheel off to have a look if anything is obvious.

Thanks for the advice guys.
