Default Old Railway Lamp

I know there are a lot of enthusiasts and ex-railway men on here. Found this old lamp in dads loft and wanted to rewire it and put it somewhere in house to annoy Mrs.

I would like to know what it's original use was, it twin lens and red, so I thought it went on back of train, but as it it has two lens was it a signal lamp?

I seem to remember these oil lamps were on level crossing gates so red light was visible along the track when road clear and vice versa when track was clear. ie when traffic was stopped.

This is probably accurate as he started work with BR working the local crossing. Shame the green one isnt here as well. Think it must have been mounted in a post or on floor by track as a stop signal.

Apologies for poor quality snaps, daylight is rarely seen in rainy Lancashire at the moment.

Thank you Deanjay, your memory is correct, they appear to have been painted red and sat in top of the barrier. Made by Sherwood lamps in Brum.

That's Eric he keeps an eye on the kids behaviour and reports back to Santa, the whiskey has been going down recently and I think he may be the culprit.

Happy Christmas.

Speaking of Sherwood's of Birmingham, I've just been watching a restoration of an old lamp made by Sherwood's. I well remember these style of lamps used by the local council in the latev 50's & 1960's along with those street oil lamps from my childhood when we had those pea souper fogs.
