The problem is that many links on cars have dust boots that are beginning to go home, predominately due to the age of the rubber.

It doesn't matter if they have been on a car for 13 years or on a shelf wrapped in wax paper for 13 years. The rubber is still 13 years old and would have degraded. So there is a risk you could fit 13 year old NOS links and see dust boots start to crack shortly thereafter. See my post above on the wing cage rubbers for my P6.

I need to change these pronto; if nothing else the driving experience is no longer pleasurable. My car sounds like some errant shopping trolley.

What is the consensus? I am reluctant to shell out on NOS links with 13 year old bonded rubber boots (which can't be replaced if they fail) for £75 or so a pair. Or do I invest in some DMGRS 'made to last' two year guarantee jobbies, pull the boots back and give them a generous dollop of creamy CV grease before I fit them?

May one ask, what make were your German TUV approved drop links?

Sorry MSS, I can't recall. I know they came in a blue box and are nickel plated as opposed to black painted. The box proudly stated their Germanic provenance.

Both links are now clattering away merrily over undulations.

I bought some of the "new" replacement rubber boots, carefully removed the old, cracked and torn ones and replaced them, only to find, prior to my MOT, that these "new" ones were split! They don't make rubber, Viton etc., like they used to. Like everything else these days, it seems to have built in obsolescence. Getting things right takes time, lots of it and some of these "developing" countries are still developing. How many far eastern car companies can you name from the fifties and sixties?

Ok, bit the bullet and just bought one of these from you Mat, (only one because I already had a genuine proper one ‘in stock’).
I’m hoping that it will reach the 120,000 miles that the originals did
I’ve had two sets of ‘genuine’, supposedly quality, drop links in the last 10,000 miles Not the cheap £9.99 ones either

The one I already have
