Have any members upgraded their Mk3 cd rom based satnav to a Mk4 dvd Based 1 i was wondering what i would need to do this & also how hard/how much it would cost . would i need to use any more wiring would the software be compatible with a Mk3 screen/ are their any differences between the screens used or is it just a case of swapping a Mk3 drive for a Mk4 dvd

The MK4 Sat Nav unit is a straight swap for the Mk3 with no other mods required. The MK4 offers split screen and if you have the DVD disk it also offer perspective view(3D). As for price they are not cheap, there's a couple on Ebay at the moment.

really worth changing the screen to the 16:9 as well as it benefits the mk4 capabilities

I had the discussion about upgrading to a 16:9 screen on this forum not too long ago. Not only do you need the new monitor unit but you will also have to purchase the BMW 16:9 capable TV tuner to replace the existing Rover module in the boot, otherwise the picture will still only be displayed in 4:3 format. If the intention is also to upgrade to a MK4 Sat Nav as well then be prepared to dig deep into your pockets.

I have done all this Plus the Newer BMW Radio Tuner, Digital TV tuner and as you say can cost a Lot.
But with the Digital Tuner you also have DAB/Digital Radio as on Freeview.
The Latest MK4 2008 Sat Nav DVD Models also feature 7 Digit Input for Postcode.
All above is of course at a High Cost.
