Well I got the clip faster than expected from the Bay, so I fitted everything back and tried to start. The pump ran and then stopped, so I thought 'It's priming OK', and tried to start. It started, but only ran for a few seconds. There was a strong smell of fuel but I can't see any leaks.
The longest it ran was for about thirty seconds, so I still have fuel starvation. I think I'll bite the bullet and inspect the internal o rings and the filter. I have new, so I think that is the next step. The canister was badly separated when I inspected it. When I tightened it I felt I used excessive force to align it for the clip, so maybe an O ring has got trapped and chewed up. I'll report what I find.

I finally got the fuel canister unscrewed. That's a story in itself. The fuel is dark black in the canister and the fuel filter is also black. Pics to follow.

The fuel in the filter canister was dark black with a lot of particulates in the fuel and at the bottom of the canister. I used a small syringe to suck out the contaminated fuel. Cleaned everything up and then WD40 on the new O rings as per T Cut’s ‘How To’. Put in the new filter and lined up, screwed the halves together and then added the magic clip to stop it unwinding again. I cleaned the surfaces of the old tank seal and managed to seat it better this time, then tightened it down with the universal tool I found on the Bay.

Hallelujah! Pump primed and she started up first time.
Amazing how noisy a test run is with the seats out and the inspection panel off.
No fuel leaks confirmed, so everything put back together (including the grand daughter's car seat )
Thanks to everyone for all the posts and advice. This forum is invaluable.

Taking fuel and spark precautions, what is the colour of the rest of the fuel in the tank ?

Have you the means to siphon some fuel from the bottom surface, ideally the lowest point of the tank after it's been stood a day or two into a glass container then let it stand an hour or two to see if there is any water in the fuel, and, or dark sediment. ?

It is obvious that there is a contaminant of some description in the tank that needs to be identified, what it is and where it came from ( which may have been many moons ago ) and removed and is possibly the thing causing your problems by reducing the flow through the filter.

I suppose that ideally it would be best to drain and flush the tank and use a new filter and go from there, then if all's OK recheck the filter after a month or so, oh for the days of fuel tank drain plugs

Hopefully the filter has done a good job and prevented whatever it is causing problems further along the fuel circuit.

Ohhh you beat me to it.

Nice to see a solution for little comparative cost, and your solution and photos will help others with similar problems.

Much appreciate your comments. I did have a peak at the fuel in the tank and it looked clear. I think some particulates came from the very old 'O' rings. However, they weren't that bad. The large one was stretched. Of the smaller ones, the bottom one was a little brittle and broke easily and the one in the canister top put up a fight to get off!
It did seem to me that the filter had done it's job and kept the bits from going further downstream.( I have a new tank seal coming from Rimmers which it looks like I don't need since I seated the old seal properly!)
The car ran great on the test, 70 mph for a few miles on the A30, so one happy camper.

An excellent diagnosis Martin and a meticulous repair (and thanks for the pictures).
