The condenser is only in the air conditioning circuit. It contains high pressure refrigerant.

Yes, you're best bet is a mobile self-employed specialist who will come to your house with all the equipment required and the experience. On no account go to the fast fit boys and avoid general garages offering regassing too.

Tom, you say that both refrigerant pipes are cold. The high pressure line (thin one) should feel hot. Are you sure that your compressor is engaging? With the engine running ask an assistant to switch between Econ and Auto modes whilst you watch the compressor drive belt. You should hear a resounding clunk as the clutch engages and the centre of the pulley will begin rotating.

Simon
Sorry, should have been clearer. It’s just the thicker pipe that’s cool with the valve marked “L.” Just triple checked the compressor and it’s deffo engaging, the other pipe doesn’t exactly feel hot, but car wasn’t running that long.

Default Strange Ac issue

Hi All, Thanks for having me on the forum. First time posting here so I thought rather then opening a new AC question would pick off this one? If not let me know. I need a little help as mines slightly different to all the other AC issues here before some one slams me for not reading other posts. Cars a zt 1.8 120 2003.

Got a small issue with the AC starting to drive me insane. Cut a long story short, AC wasn't blowing cold enough, Had it re gassed, Perfect Outside gets to 28+ and cool air starts dropping off to 14c at the vents. Take it back, guy says the compressor is naff. Ok so i buy a genuine Mg/rover Compressor and a new condenser/Dryer at the same time. Have the system recharged with 500g. Worst then ever now, no cool air at all. Garage says my new pump I just fitted isn't pumping properly. So off I go and get another while I wait for that to be returned. New pump fitted/recharged at a different garage and still the same not cold. I then replace TXV valve thinking it must be clogged. Re gassed with 450g. Slightly better, but 11.5c at the vents. Compressor running, Fan works on the condenser, No leaks, HVAC works fine (manually checked the blend flaps). At this stage I am getting a bit fed up being fobbed off, So I hooked up my gauges and checked the H/L pressure. outside temp at the time was 28c. Low pressure came in at 31psi and high 225psi. I am at loss as these seem normal looking at the R134a chart.
does any one have any ideas before I have to pull the dash out to check the Evaporator.

Hi Lewis.
Welcome to the club, first i would have started your own thread as your answers or the OP answers could get lost within each others on this thread.

When you say fan cooling front fan is working is it running continually, if you do the demist test. ?

But as i say always best to start your own thread seeing as your situation seems very complicated as you have seemed to have covered a lot of bases already.

Little update on mine. Had an air con chap out this afternoon and he successfully tracked down the leak on the system to the Condenser as Suzubulu suggested.

How big a job is it to change this over? I assume bumper off for starters. Is it something a novice could do?

Yes Tom, remove the bumper. Once disconnected plug the refrigerant lines to keep moisture and dirt out. Why not have a go? If you get stuck I'm sure that the mobile specialist will complete the job for you.

I’ll have a think on it. I’ve got a week next week where I don’t need the car, so it won’t matter if I take my time on it. Was already planning on replacing the headlining, so we’ll see.

If you can work a spanner and socket set, you can do it, I did and I'm thick 😁 bumper off, slam panel off keeping the lights attached, crash beam off then you can get at the condenser. Undo the 2 aircon pipes and make sure you clean the surfaces of the pipes thoroughly. Fit new "o" rings then put it all together again. Have fun 😎

Sounds simple enough. Will see how confident I’m feeling next week 😂

Are there any other maintenance jobs worth doing while the bumper is off?

You could clean and lubricate the bonnet latches while you can get at them 👍
