This leads to less rigidity in the pipework, giving just enough flex at the joint with the rear silencer to make positioning very difficult, and leads to the exhaust (straight section) banging on the cross braces across the 'transmission tunne
l', or the curved joint banging on the corner where it curves up over the rear suspension etc.
I've done a modification a few times now which has been successful. No pics at the moment, but if there is interest I will take some. I'm stripping my old car for spares; having just replaced it with an identical one (same year, 03 plate), which still has the original single piece exhaust.
I acquired (ebay) a simple strap about 6" long with 2 holes in it. One is fitted to a u-bot which clamps around the exhaust joint, the other end clamps around a small u-bolt, which is fitted to the anti-roll bar. The latter u-bolt has jubilee pipe clips either side of the u-bot to help prevent it from sliding along the bar.
This makes the whole exhaust less flexible and can be adjusted for optimum clearance from the body.
Solve the above outlined by flipping over the cross braces, you get an extra 10mm gap no knocking on the cross braces then.

On the rubber hangers, are there any recommendations? I see Rimmers are currently out of stock of the rear hangers and no longer carry the mid point hangers. Reckon that's the cause of my knock. I'll also take a look at flipping the cross brace.

I got a few hangers from trikey a while ago, he has (or had) boxes of them.

I forgot about the inverting the tunnel cross brace trick that Steve mentioned.
