How big a job is it to change this over? I assume bumper off for starters. Is it something a novice could do?

Hi Tom.
As Ron says first remove the bumper, top bolts x 9
1

2

Leave the centre one in loose.
3

The do the wheel arch bolts two at the top 10mm or could be screws.
4

5

Two more screw lower down 99.9% of the times these are not attached anyway.
6

Then move to the quick turn buckle fixing or 10mm bolts if they have been changed as mine have. x 4
7

8

9

You then have another 3 self tapping screws on each corner of the lower bumper 6 overall.
10

11

Once they are all remove thumb on the wing and pull down and outwards the side of the bumper.
12

13

14

15

Now remove the centre bolt you left in on the top of the bumper, so the bumper can be lowered down to the ground.
16

Last job is to undo the grey plug and you can move the bumper away from the car altogether.
17

You are now ready to tackle the the slam panel with the lights and the crash bar attached as one unit.

If you’re going to DIY ensure the system has been de-gassed first; it’s an offence to vent air con gas into the atmosphere.

Think I will likely give it a go, as I’ve got most of next week to sort it.

Will it be worth getting hold of a Haynes manual? Is it any good? Haven’t used one in donkeys years! Think the last one I had was for a Capri 😂

Hi Tom.
Haynes can be ok for a quick check, but mostly keep in reserve for when toilet roll gets to expensive or on ration.

Below are photo of how to remove the slam panel on and diesel but 1.8 &20 petrol are the same accept for maybe how the fan fits at the bottom, as fan will have to be removed as well to fit a new condenser.

Bumper off which you will have done as per photos above.
1

Undo the top bolts on the slam panel but avoid the bonnet latches, first one the bracket connecting to the fuse box and panel, your will most likely be 8mm.
2

Next opposite side bracket holding the A/C pipes to the panel again 8mm
3

Next the coolant tank bolt 8mm mine are only 10mm because i changed them all out for stainless steel ones.
4

Next undo but do not take out the slam panel to front wings bolts these will be 10mm make note of the slam panel ends and the lines on the wings, these are for alignment when refitting.
5

6

Next unplug the horn loom next to the washer bottle attached to the chassis drivers side, it will need prying off the arm
7

Now unclip the bonnet cable black box inside front drivers side inner wing.
8

Pop out the single cable from the box, also take note your black block may well be the opposite way round to mine, when you re-fit it turn round the same as mine.
9

Now go the the bottom of the slam panel and remove the two 10mm bolts holding the A/C pipe work, N/S
10

The O/S you also have to undo the ambient temp switch 8mm then the rail 10mm
11

Now lower the rail to the floor out of the way.
12

Not much more to do to remove the slam panel including the crash bar and the heads lights in one section.

Using a 13mm long socket on an extension bar undo and remove four bolts either side of the crash bar, do not undo or remove the 13mm nut.
13

Two other bolts will be inside the round holes.
14

You are now ready to lower /remove the slam panel from the car, with an helping hand, get someone to hold the slam panel for you while you remove the two loose 10mm bolts holding the slam panel to the front wings.

Now slowly let the panel come forwards, so you can reach behind and unplug the front lights.

The panel should new be free to remove and set down out of the way.
14a

You can then undo and remove the A/C pipe connections 8mm bolts, your will be going through the fan cowling.
15

16

17

Pop the pipes from the condenser, and away from the fan cowling.

Your next move is to remove the fan from the car so you can get to the condenser, more photos to follow

Hi Tom.
From following the above instructions and photos you should be at the stage of removing the fan/cowling from the car, the car in these photo's is a MGZT 190 bit 1.8 will be the same more or less.

1

make sure the A/C pipe connections are out of the way, undo and remove two 8mm bolts either side of the fan cowling.
2

3

Then at the bottom of the fan cowling underneath you will see two clips remove these.
4

With the fan remove you can now remove the condenser.
5

Undo the two 8mm bolts going through the radiator into the rear of the condenser at the top.
6

7

Now you can lift up the condenser from the car.
8

Fit new condenser and re-fit the fan, slam panel, bumper remember use new seal O-rings on the connections to the condenser.
9

good luck give it a go

Just a little bump to say I finally finished this! After starting the Friday before last and having a long break to let the heatwave pass! Was pretty straightforward in the end. Though I’m not sure I want to get the whole front end again any time soon. Thanks to all for the fantastic instructions.

Have had the system re-gassed too and it’s working well now.

Next job on the list is the seized rear seat. I keep trying and trying to no avail as per the instructions on here. Guess it’s just a knack, not giving up just yet though.

If I may reply, you can get the o rings from either Rimmer's or DMGRS. I'm surprised they didn't come with the condenser?

Just remembered, I've got a brand new spare pair from when I did mine. PM me your address if they're any use to you 😎
