Would love to do this, but logistically not possible,as it would be about 4 days for me,unless it was at school holiday time, and I was able to persuade the family to come along.

I would be out for this due to previous arrangements, and having done Stornoway to Barra this past summer.

It might be worth looking at doing a 'Hopscotch', doing Ullapool to Stornaway, then down through Lewis and Harris, then Leverburgh to Berneray Ferry, onto North Uist, departing Lochmaddy on North Uist to Uig on Skye.

Ferry Costs are only a few £'s more, and the distances are not big, and there are some amazing beaches and views (subject to weather!) on this trip, as well as saving 'doubling back' on a lot of the route.

The ferry to Berneray is an experience, as it has to turn multiple times to stay in the deep channel, there is only a few feet of water under the keel at some points.

Enjoy whatever you do, they are amazing islands!

We were on Lewis/Harris a couple of years ago. The ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert on Harris is considerably cheaper than Ullapool to Stornaway.

We 'did' the Western Isles a few years ago in our VW camper. at the end of May. Crossed from Oban to Castlebay, (Barra), which was a 5 1/2 hour crossing. Started on Vatersay and, over a period of a fortnight, worked our way north right up to the Butt Of Lewis. We returned from Tarbet to Uig on Skye and spent a couple of day there until returning back to the mainland.
All I can say is, it was the best holiday ever, what a stunning place to visit and, I'd love to join you again on this trip but, I sadly don't think it will be possible. If circumstances change then maybe we'll be able to make it, but anyway, I hope, if it all comes off, you all have a wonderful time, I'm certain you'll love it!

This was our 2 night stop on Barra

Excellent responses so far.....I have never done the Western Isles before and i quite fancy this a 'wee driving tour' .

I am looking at April for this, certainly a 'long weekend' as it's a fair drive, but i think it would be a smashing wee break.

I would really love this to be good to go.

What we did was booked the first ferry from Uig, drove up during the night and arrived early enough to get a couple of hours in the car while waiting for the ferry.
