3 speed Fan Issues
Hi guys,
I had the opportunity to have my Mk1 PPD 75 on T4 today. The guy checked the VIS motors on the 2.5 litre KV6 to find 1 not working but thats fine I have spares. He also checked the fan operation, 1 dead 2 dead 3 working correctly, fast. I am unsure about how exactly to fix this problem. After reading, the most common fault is the brushes and it seems these are the favourite replacements https://www.ecp.co.uk/rover75-carbon-brushes.php I am unsure how to go about fixing this problem and where to buy the replacement parts, or do I go down the mk2 fan with gold resistor route??? I would also like to add that my current fan has written on it in white pen, 2.0 KV6?? is there a difference in fans between 2.0 and 2.5? Thanks for looking.

Unfortunately most of Arctic's pics fell ransom to Photobucket but here's a video of his:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls1B...ature=youtu.be Quite a lot of information if you use the search, no need to completely remove the cowling free the small bolts and lift & hinge it to the side. Good luck with the three torx screws holding the motor, these can be difficult. Regards |

I am pretty sure the gold resistor only applies to the two speed fan.

But as for converting it, anything is possible once you've replaced the brush(es) but I'd keep it as a 3 speed fan. If you wish to replace the 3 speed with a 2 speed fan it's plug & play. Regards |

You can rewire a three speed fan ( Petrol or Diesel) to operate as a two speed but to do this the three speed fan must be in good working condition. So you would have to strip down and replace the brushes first and if you use the correct brushes the repair will be long lasting anyway.

All you need to do is to renew the worn down brushes which can be ordered directly from Engineering Carbon Products Ltd. for about £20. These were purpose made for our fan motors and mine are still going strong after 50,000 miles (nearly better than the originals)! The 2 speed system has its own problems:
I would advise against using the car until this fault is repaired. Currently your fan won't run until the coolant temperature reaches 112 degrees and even then the "fast" speed will actually be "slow" because of the failed brushes. Both KV6 engine capacities used the same fan system so there's no significance in the "2.0 KV6" marking other than it sounds as if it was second-hand from such a car. I agree with the consensus that you should keep what you've got and repair it. Simon
