Default Cheap MAF's

Following on from my feedback on my check engine light, I need a new MAF.

However, being tight, I wanted to check out the wisdom, or otherwise, of buying a cheap ebay MAF.

I noted a comment by one poster that it was unwise to do this, but wondered if there was any sensible opinions out there from people who had bought either Bosch or cheap ebay - or both preferably.

A lot of people will just buy Bosch, content to rely on the name.

However, ss noted by many, the original MAF is far from perfect, with PB MAF's voted for by many.

I am also aware that a large number of aftermarket parts are not to good, but equally, if I know someone who is in the trade, and in the know, I will follow theri advice.

A friend of mine sells heated oxygen sensors which are much cheaper than the originals, and just as good.

So let's have it guys, who has experience with MAF's, rather than just opinions and pre-conceived positions.

Best wishes, Frank

Not worth the box they come in, but if you want to waste some money on one up to you!

Buy cheap, buy twice!

I bought a £30 ebay MAF - lasted 6 weeks. Replaced with a Britpart copy Freelander one for £35 (trade price inc 12 month warranty) which has been working fine for 10 months.
At the time Bosch MAFs were £200+; now they're £120 I'll probably get Bosch when the cheapy dies.

There is only one maf that does the job properly and that's the original Bosch with the correct part number.

I've tested hundreds of cars and the outputs of all the different types of maf if you want the best in performance and economy them it's the Bosch you need

Please note I don't have anything to do with selling mafs, the only thing I'm interested in is for owners to get the best from their cars.

Russ

I agree from my (limited) experience and Internet research. Having been advised my poor fuel consumption might be due to an out of spec MAF
I tried a genuine Bosch MAF designed for a VW diesel, which is very close in performance to the one designed for the M47 engine. It cost about £70. It lasted about 18 months, 15,000 miles. I've put the original MAF back in, because that wasn't the problem. So that's been good for 90,000 miles in just under 6 years. (I have the complete maintenance history of the car).
I take it you know if you go the Pierburg route you will also need to buy a MAFAM compensator? If you haven't already done so, check out this site http://www.tuning-diesels.com/index2n.htm

And the reason why you get what you pay for is that platinum wire within the sensor is more expensive than tungsten

Default Consensus-from those that know

Well friends,

having had the great BigRuss and Jules reply that the cheapies are no good, with supporting evidence from people who have tried that route, it looks like I might be forced to examine the inside of my wallet a bit harder.

If BigRuss and Jules say no, I take notice. When all the assembled choir of knowledge sings "Don't do it" even a certified tightwad like me has to be told.

What was it, "buy cheap, buy twice"?

Many thanks guys, you may have saved me from myself.

Best wishes, Frank

Default Mafs

You should have been around probably 4-5 yrs ago when the cheapie 'Chinese' ones started appearing to see how many came short buying them.
It's been reported 'ad nauseum' that the Bosch is the only reliable one (except Pierburg with Mafam)
This is cheapest source we know of at present. Took 5 days to arrive.

There seemed to be a lot of MAF problems just after buying my car new in 2003. They were also about £120 then but managed to get an original Bosh for £60...........it's been on the shelf since then ! Oh well, guess the platignum wires in it won't go rusty ! ! (only done 53,000 miles so early days yet)
