My 2005 (built and registered) facelift did NOT have the tyre protectors fitted (so I fitted some myself).

As above, the parts were only fitted to select cars between two chassis numbers. We did loads of these and also fitted them as an aftermarket item. You have to remember though that all manufacturers have an issue but iirc only Rover and Citroen tried to reduce the damage. I attended an MGR technical clinic when spring breakages started to happen and MGR were convinced it was caused by 'brake spray' that's used to clean the brakes

Brake spray, now that's very interesting, I remember replacing a spring on a Peugeot 807 after cleaning up the discs with brake spray, about a week later SNAP!! Spring gone

If brake spray could cause a spring to break, what would it do to the hub, disc and all the metal around it ?

Can't see it myself.

Default Broken coil springs

This problem can also affect Tourers. I had a front spring break at about 30mph and the explosion was the destruction of the tyre with the sharp end of the flailing coil spring. The tyre protectors had never been stalled on my car even though it was serviced by Rover dealerships up to the collapse of the company. Jules fitted them in the last few months. I agree that if this were to happen on a motorway it would be heart-stoping, or worse. A colleague experienced it on his BMW at a motorway junction. Another colleague had several springs on his Mercedes replaced due to breakage, so it is a very common problem on many makes of cars.

Bad top mounts plus cold weather will kill springs too! worth changing your top mounts if your replacing the springs.
Always better to replace in pairs too!

I recently had a spring fail and it had the tyre protector on and it still murdered my tyre, so Im not sure why it did it, I think it might have been rust, but its now been replaced!

Plenty of threads in this forum on the lack of protection from "so called tyre protectors".....

Not fitted on mine and I have had 2 rears gone and one front ( I think) But never lost a tyre as a result..
