Default Uneven tyre wear

My car had a mixture of el cheapo tyres on it when I bought it. Don't even match across axles. But they all had plenty of tread so little point changing immediately.

8,000 miles later and I have noticed the fronts are wearing badly on the OUTER edges only. They're legal, as in the central 3/4 has plenty of tread, but they're bald around the edges. Why could this be? One is wearing quite a bit on the inside too, not as much, but noticeably. The other doesn't seem to be, I can feel its not very bald.
I had the tracking done soon after I got it, although iirc only the front.

Could this just be cheapo tyres past their best? Or something else? Not impressed with the tyres anyhow so was vaguely considering changing them soon, but obviously don't want decent new ones to wear like that immediately.

Check that the pressures are correct Henry, then get a proper 4 wheel alignment check done.

+1 for this. Solved mine last year. Make sure it is 4 wheel alignment, and if the operator says they can only do the front, go elsewhere. From experience, the Hunter tracking system is capable of doing it.

Well, when I bought the car I had the alignment done, but only the fronts I think as clf says. And with regards tyre pressures, I've always done them with my bike pump which has a guage. But I did it at a garage the other day and a few of them were around 6 PSI over. So I'm not entirely sure which one is accurate.

So maybe 4 wheel alignment followed by new tyres?

Hi Henry,
I think the Northwest group are trying to organise a garage day in August. The garage is in Atherton and they will do 4 wheel tracking amongst other things. If your really lucky BigRuss may attend with his T4 to work his magic. Have a look on the Northwest events forum for details of garage.

New tyres first, tyre pressures then on a hunter,, i used the hunter for a few years!
I should remember from doing mine is that ur limited to front toe, altho if camber and caster is out either something is worn(rearmost lower arm bush, ?) Or moving the subframe might help.
The rear again is tricky to get even, involves loosing main rear axle mount bolts and shifting mount plate with lever until as much rear readings gets in the green...user should aim for 0 total toe at rear then move to the front axle.. never always possible to get all angles perfect..
Users should have rear skid plates on his ramp aswel as turn plates on front, and its recommended that u have a full tank of fuel..
Oh and before they set it up, get it checked for even ride hight and play/movement in joints etc...

Here's the specs.

The unladen condition is the car with no occupants and the fuel tank 90% full (MGR workshop manual).

Thanks, I would certainly be interested in that. Been meaning to investigate T4 for a while too!

The original front tyres that were on my ZTT when I bought it wore on the outer front edges. I had a new set of tyres fitted and four wheel alignment done and the new set of tyres are wearing absolutely fine. I was advised when the alignment check was done that the front and rear alignment was quite a bit out.
