Default Bottom crank pulley

Just wondering if any members are near burnley who have access to a impact gun so I can get my bottom pulley changed?

If not its to the hire shop I go.

Ah for the sake of £30 I've hired one, hope it will do the job on Friday.

Dear Simon,

I have posted on this topic before, but if it helps anyone, I hope my comments will be read.

I could not move my crank pulley bolt with an impact wrench. So I did what many people do and "managed" with a 1/2" socket and a big tube.

However, doing this made me vow never to repeat it.

So, when I next heard the dreaded knock (on another 75 - these things are addictive) I searched the net and bought a 3/4" drive socket set.

This made the job so easy, I kicked myself for being a cheapskate and not getting one before. The difference is unbelievable.

So I would advise anybody who contemplates doing this crank pulley change to use 3/4" sockets and make it easy.

The set was, from memory (it is at work, where it has proved essential on a couple of jobs) a silverline and only cost under 40 quid

On fleabay at the moment - same set

I hired big impact gun from HSS hire and it did the trick.

All sorted now and lovely and quiet again.

The problem is the automatic version, where a lock of the engine is not simple.
In that case a good impact gun is really worth it!

But get a good one, cheap stuff just makes a noise but gets nowhere, --- not unlike many of the owners!

Anybody got a video/sample of this dreaded knock sound?

As I was getting intermittent whining noises occasionally from the left side of the engine before I noticed this knocking sound. coincidence?

Could the knocking sound you mention be mistaken for internal bearing knock?

It is coming from the left side.

Good to hear that Simon. I also forgot to add that I fabbed up and machined a locking mechanism for the pulley.

This is probably beyond the facilities of most owners, but I was stuck in the company workshop with the car, a lathe and milling machine and a welding set, so it got done.

Best wishes, Frank

You'd know if you had crank pulley rattle. It makes things sound very very broken

edit... this was mine; https://youtu.be/8a8zAltalSA

Not to be confused with a failing water pump:

Unlikely - they sound like they are external to the block, and these engines aren't known for any internal bearing noises, apart from the normal stone crushing.
