The first thing I would advise is to switch off the air con and keep it off until the fan is repaired. A failed low speed fan could damage the compressor.
Next we need to determine if you've got a three speed or two speed fan so you need to look through the grill and see if there is a resistor at about two o' clock, if so you've got a two speed and its likely all you will need is a new resistor. If not then you could have a three speed which could necessitate new brushes in the fan motor itself. Either way it a bumper off job I'm afraid Here's an excellent explanation of how to remove the bumper... https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...17&postcount=1 The author of the post Jules is also the place to go for replacement resistors if its a two speed fan. If its a three speed fan then you need to order new specific brushes from here https://www.engineeringcarbonproduct...on-brushes.php Search the forum for fitting details on either, there are many many posts to help Paul Last edited by paulh260260; 3rd July 2021 at 13:10.. |

This is a bit of a worry though.

I think an second opinion from someone who understands how the KV6 cooling system works would be first plan but I'm thinking cooling fan failure is first problem, what year is your car as later cars do have oil cooler problems

Dont go by the dash temp gauge - quarter to 9 can be anything from 75 to 110 - use the onboard diagnostic which gives the real time engine temp -see link below 19.7 to get the true temp reading .
https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=55585 Not sure on the actual trigger point on the V6 but i would expect your low speed fan to trigger about 103/104/105 and bring it down into the 90's. Have you done the demist test to see if your low speed fan is working ?

Great advice but could be easier said than done, car is in West Cornwall, near St Ives. The nearest I know of is MGR South Devon, 100+ miles away in Newton Abbot. Dunno if Bob (Flying Banana) would have any suggestions

I have never had any dealings with Russell but if Banana’s woes continue I will give him a bell. There is a garage in St.Agnes that works on MG’s. Try timkellymgcentre.co.uk. Again never used them, too far away, but have heard good reports. In the RAC/AA or any other breakdown service? Might be worth a try with them.

If we are talking 3 speed fans then 1.8 low speed is 98oC high speed is 105oC
V6 low speed is 96oC medium speed is 102oC and high speed kicks in at 108oC I suspect this is a later car and will have a 2 speed fan so on my v6 with a 2 speed fan it kicks it at 104oC |

I'm sorry, the figures you've given are all incorrect. The values you have quoted above for the V6 3 speed are the fan cut-out temperatures, not when those speeds cut-in. Similarly for the 1.8 whose low speed cut-out temperature is 98˚C. MG Rover data gives the high speed cut-out temperature for that engine as 106˚ not 105˚. No changes are documented for "later cars" so a 2 speed fan on a V6 should still start at 100˚ as it's the ECM which determines this, not the fan control box. The behaviour of your V6 is puzzling. Did you see 104˚ on your IPK diagnostics before your fan started running? Simon
