MOT pass but need tyres.

Car passed mot again but got advisory on 3 tyres, I may as well change all 4. I have 205/65/15 fitted at the moment, in the manual it says 195/55/15 which are the better of the 2 or is there any other sizes I could use which would be better, many thanks....

You current tyres are a bigger profile so will be more comfortable and softer then the original spec.

The best Wet grip? Dry grip? Lasts forever? Quiet?

I like my peace and comfort so I start with the lowest dB rating and then look for the best wet grip. So Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2 at £65 in 195 size would suit me. The same tyre in 205 size is louder, less grippy and £101.You pay your money and take your choice

Double check the sizes

195/55 or 195/65 ?

And make sure the speed rating is OK. The early cars spec was "V" For the later ones, as yours is a diesel - it's "H" .

I believe they were a factory fitted alternative to the 195/65/15's

You'll probably find that the 195's are easier to find and quite a bit cheaper.

The 205's will be that little bit more comfortable but there's a fair amount of difference between tyres/brands so you may well lose that depending on what you go for. You'll also see that the 205 width isn't listed in the 2004 handbook.

Remember to have all 4 wheels tracked and have a full tank of fuel when they do it.

The best tyre I have found is the original 195/65/15V which is fitted on my contour wheels on the diesel. I have a set of fork spokes with 205/55/16 Avon Z5 tyres on. Very uncomfortable on the diesel I find.I fitted them on the 2.5 Connie, and they were uncomfortable on it also, so they are stored in the garage, and the original wheels with 195/65/15 Tyres are on it. The best tyres I have found are Goodyear Efficient Grip performance.

Michelin tyres are the best quality on the market, have been for over 35 years from when I was a tyre fitter. But, they are expensive. I had Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres on my BMW 530D touring and would happily use them again, great tyres and not too expensive. Likewise Toyo Proxxes on my Datsun.
