Default This is for the would be plumbers

Do not use either of these two valves, they are both prone to some form of failure.
The Red and Brass one can allow water to pass
The silver one can leak where the screw driver goes if not regularly turned. Damn annoying as you may only want to turn it off in an "emergency"

I dont care what others say, they are prone to failure... I know from personal experience

Oh and Drain cocks, use type A
Type A drain cocks- valves have a gland on the spindle, which helps stop water loss when in use.
Type B drain cocks- valves have no gland and are better suited to boiler houses where a little water loss doesn't matter too much.

Here is a link to a drain cocks.... you may have to remove the letter s between drain and 15mm for the link to work

Not only that Ian,the gate wheel valves have a nasty habit of closing and not opening again, but yes I agree with you on both counts.

Many of the imported copper and "brass" fittings are just plain bad! I can remember my dad had a scedule of every six months, he would open and close every valve in the house (built in the 1960's) and they always worked. The only valves that I have had problems with recently have been recent "imported" ones (similar to the above). I've seen brass fittings that are a hundred years old that still work and can, if necessary be stripped and rebuilt with new washers.

It's exactly the same with radiator valves. Those sold in stores for a couple of £ are just rubbish.

A traditional brass Belmont/pegler valve with two green o'rings is a pleasure to use!

Pump isolation valves are another dodgy item, again mainly due to years of inactivity.pretty useless really when they fail to fulfill their purpose when needed.

I had 2 that leaked. The nuts holding the valves to the pump were so tight even with a 2 inch spanner that is 18 inches long I could not undo the nuts in situ. I had to remove pump and valves and take to the garage and boy did I struggle to undo the nuts. OMG they were tight.
