Ordered a new tensioner and idler pulley this morning from local shop, Mrs Andy is off now to collect them. Meanwhile whilst trying to remove the arm with some leverage, the NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- thing has snapped
Going to be a struggle to get this out....
Can't swing a hammer in there!

HI Andy.
I am presuming you removed the centre back nut holding the arm into the tensioner before trying to remove the arm, and have you also undone the two securing bolts holding the tensioner to the block.

If you undo them a little you could maybe pry the tensioner back a little helping the arm to release.

It's hard to help really unless you are at the face of the job, i'm sure you will win in the end.

Yes the bolts were out and the nut was off. That was the easy bit and tensioner came loose straight away. I was using a 2 foot pry bar to lever the armwhen it cracked.
After liberal use of penetrating fluid and about ½ an hour tapping away at it, the arm finally caved in and came loose.

Turns out it was rusted solid, see photos. Also looked like it had been wearing unevenly for some time as there was a groove worn in it.

The old tensioner may well be ok, but s** it I've got a new one and I'm not doing this again!

I'm supposed to be driving to Wales on Saturday at some point....

I got the new arm in place, packed in grease, then fiddled for ages because the tensioner was upside down

Pulleys now on, I'm ready to refit alternator, pump, Idler, belt, engine mount, wheel arch, and simply change the oils in gearbox and engine.
Then have a holiday.

Your pictures as usual are a great help.

Hi Andy.
Big battle but should be worth it in the end, knowing you should not have to do this job again ever on the car, your holiday will be well deserved that's for sure have a good one.
