Flat battery?
So just came back to the car after being at work for 8 hours, I drove to the tram stop fine and to the shop this morning and again all was fine, but just got back to the car and the battery is flat and won't start at all, I couldn't even unlock it with the key! The only thing that came up was the battery and oil light and absolutely nothing else! Why has this happened? I didn't leave the headlights on and it hasn't been that cold? But it's as flat as a pancake! I have jump leads but need another car to connect them too.
Any ideas? |

I've had this before and it was a plate in the battery that had collapsed.
I'd driven to the bank, parked up, went to the cash machine, came back and the battery was dead just like yours.

yeah sounds like a collapsed cell in the battery.

How old is your battery .
Check the connections are solid. If its a CDT check your plenum chamber isnt flooded . Frankly it could be many things . |

It's a petrol but the plenums aren't blocked either. Looking through the paperwork and the battery is from 2011.
If it is a collapsed battery cell, would it go flat as quick as that? I've never heard of it before so I'm unsure. Is the battery completely useless now then or would I be able to jump start it with some leads and park it outside my house? I did roll down a steep hill and try to start it up but nothing happened. I'd say you won't have a chance to jump start it if the battery has lost a cell, and yes the battery will not be any use now. Only course of action is to fit a new battery unfortunately.
Also it's not that the battery has gone flat when a cell collapses, it's that the voltage drops due to there being one less cell. IE, if the battery is made up of 8 cells of 1.5V each losing one cell through collapse would mean that the battery voltage drops to 10.5V, enough to illuminate a couple of dash lights but not much else

I'll have to try and get one but its gonna be after xmas now as I'm just to busy at work and with the car not running it's even harder to get to where I need to go to get the battery! Terrible! I'll buy a new one from eBay, are there any that people would recommend?

As for the boot rack, have you seen it? Is it used or new what they have? I will try and give them a call myself too tomorrow. Last edited by Dragrad; 5th December 2015 at 22:00.. Reason: Consecutive posts - use the edit or Multi-quote :-) |

It'll be worth doing a few checks first though before splashing out. I'd measure the voltage across the battery first.
