Ticking noise on my diesel when cold
Hi guys
Recently noticed a ticking noise from the engine area when the car is first started up. Once it warms up it appears to go away. Any idea what this could be? Thanks. Car is a rover 75 mk1 cdt diesel. |

Might just be cold diesel engine clatter, or could be an early sign of crank pulley failure

Nope it's defo there. I remember my 220 turbo did it and it was a leaking manifold. It sounds the same. I wonder if it's that?

No, moths like that. Fairly sure it's a blow somewhere. You only hear it when it's stone cold.

Rav, try this, from under the car, with engine running, spray some water on the crank pulley,if noise disappears briefly, then its likely to be pulley failure.
Another test to do, with engine running, switch on air con and move steering to full lock and hold it, if noise increases, then the same verdict apples. Replacement part is a Corteco item which is OEM, you can get the Freelander one from here

It is possible its the hydraulic tappets, quietening down once warmed up a bit.

I have had the same problem for a couple of Months now and dismissed the crank pulley as I replaced it last year (albeit not a Corteco one but a new aftermarket one). The noise isn't the same as last year (although similar) as it's a tsk tsk tsk sound which disappears as soon as the engine warms up after idling for 10 minutes.
The reason I'm starting to believe I need a new crank pulley though is because I have tried the water test and the noise disappears immediately but returns after approximately 20seconds. Could also be my PAS pump as the reservoir overflowed last week but the pulley is solid and since that one mishap it hasn't overflowed again. Car is booked in the garage for Monday afternoon for a pre MOT so they will investigate then. If needed though, no cutting corners and I'll be buying a genuine Corteco pulley this time lol.

The water pump can make a similar noise when it has play in the pulley.
Easily felt once the belt is off. |
