Key dissassembly - any idea?
OK - I had this with my MG ZT last year when I had to pay the key cutter for a new high priced key fob/key as he wouldn't cut the cheap one I had bought off eBay. Now a key for my Rover 75 has fallen apart - the button that opens it up fell to pieces, luckily in my yard. I have a spare key fob that is exactly the same size with a blank. Question - how do you remove the existing metal key from the old one to put it into the new one? It looks as though it is just a plug of black plastic wedged in place, but I have tried with electrical pliers to pull the old one out of the old shell, but no joy. I can see if I persist it will break. I can't seem to push with a screwdriver from the back end.
So over to the forum - anyone have any ideas, or is this a pay up and shut up business once again? Cheers.. It now turns out the independent key cutter in Oswestry has closed down - only Timpsons who won't do Rover keys at all - policy, apparently. I may be heading further afield with it... Tried the pliers, but looked like damage would be done to the blade before getting it out, so desisted. Last edited by oswestryalex; 5th May 2017 at 22:14.. Reason: update on saga |

Should just pull out, but might be held in with a roll pin. Possibly been superglued in previously! As the old fob is broken you could cut it up to get the original key out. Gareth |

I had a very worn key fob on my last car and managed to grab a couple of scrap car keys that were in great condition. Stripped the pcb's and transponders out of old keys ready to go into scrap key.
I removed the loose blade of one by putting the blade in a vice and loads of wiggling. the plastic around the blade was worn and broken so it came out with a snap eventually. wasn't bothered as it was the fob that was going in the bin, did the same to the scrap car key, so a bit of araldite into the newer fob, let it dry and all was good in the hood.

As with other comments but I found that a tiny piece of double sided tape keeps the chip in place in the fresh fob.

In my (limited) experience, it's virtually impossible to extract the blade with it's plastic insert with some damage. Refitting the now compromised insert into a new fob is very difficult. The insert will go so far, but is unlikely to give as neat a job as the original. The use of some sort of adhesive seems to be usual. Supergloo will certainly bond the joint well enough.

The local key-cutter here has no problem copying the key-blade into one of the eBay case with a blank blade things. He has to disassemble the original (= destroy) to fit his machine, so on all 4 of my cars I've had two made each time. Cost me 10 Euros a pop for cutting though.

Key dissassembly - any idea?
It is held in with a roll pin. I carefully cut around the plastic using a Dremel to expose the roll pin. Then pushed out the pin using a pin punch or drift. Of course the key fob is fit for nothing after key blade removal, but it is the one that is due for scrappage anyway. Best of luck

Yes there is a small roll pin inside. When I replaced both my key fobs as the buttons were gone I managed to just pull the blade out of the one and I refitted it using a dab of superglue and it's perfect. The other one wouldn't come out at all, so my local cobbler cut me a new blade for £8 but did warn me some ebay blanks may break his cutting tool which I'd be liable to pay for.
I took the chance and it cut spot on. |
