Default High emissions

Would appreciate advice. My 1.8t failed it's mot with high emissions on the 3000 rev test. I am told that there is wear on the piston rings and that the engine needs a complete re build. I am reluctant to part with the car and would be prepared to commit to some expense. But what is likely to be necessary to put things right?

I would get a second opinion on that diagnosis, there could be many reasons for the high emissions.
Is the engine using excessive quantities of oil or exhibit a heavy build up of carbon under the oil filler cap when you remove it, if not it is unlikely it will be piston rings.
There are a few tests that can be done to give a more accurate diagnosis without tearing the engine down.
Out of interest how many miles has the car covered and what type of usage has it had in its lifetime (mostly motorway miles or spent its life on short local journeys)?

Do you have clouds of blue smoke when the engine is warm and the engine is revved ? If you don't, then the high emissions could be a lambda sensor that's failed.

If it's running ok I'd take it somewhere else.

As your car is a turbo it could be oil collecting in the intercooler especially the car has only been doing low speed short journeys.

At 3000 revs any oil that's collected in the intercooler will be blown through and will affect emissions.

Will a compression test identify if the rings or barrels are worn?
Unless failed piston rings are common, very common, I'd be surprised if without any investigation Mr Average could correctly identify failed failed piston rings.

I doubt the very much that diagnosis is correct, it's more likely to be a sensor that is the issue or your fuelling adaptations that need a reset.

Have you had any other engine work done recently?

Default High Emissions

My first thing would be to do a compression test, that would give you the state of the engine, but I also don't think the mot tester is right in saying its a worn engine, but a compression test will prove that.

Yes a new test centre is th way to go. Another test would be you go is take th oil filler cap off when its running. If it blows ya hat off your cylinders are "passing" Then as said before a compression test. Does it use oil and/or blue smoke from th exhaust??? If it does it on th over run it could be old cracked valve seals or warn valves. Start at th cheap end and never except th worst prognosis.
