75 Cdt broken front spring what can I fit???
Hi All,
I am a newbie to the forum. I bought a 75 connie cdt saloon on saturday 2001 model on a Y plate. I got up on Sunday morning and decided whilst the car was warming up to check the tyres for wear, thank god I did as the nearside front road spring was broken and sticking into the top of the tyre. From my searches through various posts this seems to be very common on the diesels and very common at sub zero temperatures!!! My questions to whom ever can answer is: The diesel front springs and the v6 front springs seem to be the same ones is this correct? also Can I fit zt 190 saloon springs to my cdt using my struts? Any help would be appreciated. Kind Regards Ogg |

The correct springs are displayed on the label under the back seat swab.
The springs are not the same and there are various models and Dampers for the different specifications/engines etc. All available from Rimmers and Les at SMC Trading may have some to. Third party springs do seem to have a one size fits all but cannot comment on those. Always change springs in pairs. Welcome to the club by the way. I got 2 replacement springs for the front and a set of tyre protectors, had quite a lot of hassle getting them as nobody seems to have them anymore!!!
I tried to tackle the job today and couldnt even get my front wheel off. The wheel nuts were air gun tight and the locking wheel nut thread was basically stripped on the bolt before I got to it. Ive tried everything to remove it, I bashed a socket onto it which gripped but then shredded the outside of the bolt. It has claimed 1 short half inch extension bar, and I cant take the car anywhere to remove the locking stud as it has a coil spring digging into its front tyre!!!!!!!!!!! I am really hacked off with this car now and can see this being a very short ownership. I have always wanted an r75 diesel but the problems are getting me down. Snapped coil spring, flooded front and rear carpets, flooded boot, intemittent fuel pump problem. Sorry for the rant but I hate it when I try to do a job and you get the most stupid problems due to badly designed locking bolts!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Reading the XPart02 statement somewhere on the forum, they state they have sourced a new spring supplier, and that the spring reference colours/numbers will be the same as the orginal OE springs.
More than likely they are using stock springs from one of the large spring makers Kilen, KYB etc and I can't see these companies making specific springs for the different specs. I have just bought 2 Kilen springs to go on my rears for less than half price of a pair of Rover ones. Stubs whey hey a 1000 posts. Last edited by STUBIE; 18th February 2010 at 23:06.. |

I think rear CDT springs were/are a little rarer but as stated new supplies of these are now from a different source.
Rimmers have all the front tyre protectors www.thepart.com list them as having almost 2000 of these at £7.50 plus vat Stubs |

Rimmers have about 1962 pairs of tyre protectors.
They bought most of the remaining European stock and had it shipped to the UK. |

Ogg, I feel for you, I went through the same problem as you 2 days before Christmas (but not the rounded wheel nuts). I don't have any real solution for you except to ring a mobile mechanic to get the wheel off.... let HIM struggle in the cold and wet! Not what you want to hear I know, especially as it costs more unnecessary expense, but it would save you falling out too much with what most of us have come to care for and cherish deeply, our 75's and ZT's!
By the way, I phoned the AA and let THEM struggle.... it was recovered to a garage (after phoning a week earlier to get Homestart added to my membership!). Please don't be too disheartened about the 'problems', there is a LOT of VERY helpful advice on here from a LOT of VERY knowledgeable and helpful people..... it can all be sorted quite easily. There may even be someone in your area that is able to physically help, but please put your town on your membership details so that they show up when you post so that we can all see at a glance whether we could help, or even suggest someone that could. Note to mod.... could the above suggestion (adding your town) become a compulsory part of becoming a member? It could be very helpful to someone someday.... plus it is nice to know who is in the same area.
